From West Africa to the World: The Journey Behind Sena Nukunu
My name is Afiwa, and Sena Nukunu is more than just a brand — it’s my story woven into fabric.
Born in West Africa and raised with the vibrant traditions of my people, I came to the United States as a young refugee, carrying with me a deep love for culture, community, and craftsmanship. Over the years, I built a career as a scientist and earned my Doctorate in Pharmacy, but I always knew my purpose reached further, back to my roots, and forward to something greater.
As a military spouse and mother, I’ve moved across the U.S. and overseas. No matter where life took me, African fabrics sparked recognition, pride, and curiosity. I saw how clothing could become a conversation — a way to reconnect to identity, celebrate ancestry, and invite others into the richness of African culture. That was the beginning of Sena Nukunu.
“Sena Nukunu” means “God gives wonders” — a name inspired by my children, journey, and our family’s heritage. This brand celebrates the artistry, resilience, and storytelling traditions of West Africa. Every garment and piece of art is crafted with intention and sourced from talented artisans across Ghana, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Sena Nukunu is a bridge — connecting cultures, generations, and dreams. It honors the past, empowers the present, and inspires the future. This journey is also deeply personal: it is the first step in a larger vision to build schools, clinics, and opportunities across the continent.
